Authorities in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state have announced that payment of state government employees’ arrears is ongoing in the state.
The civil servants have gone unpaid for months since the start of conflict in the state in December, which resulted in the destruction of the pillaging of the state capital including key institutions such as ministries and banks.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Upper Nile State Information Minister Philip Jiben stated salaries payment committee has started its work in the state.
He noted January and February salaries will be paid but not yet March, adding that civil servants will be required to appear in person in order to receive their salaries.
“Civil servants are now receiving their two months salaries – as I speak now there is no problem of salaries at all in Upper Nile,” said the minister. “March salaries are not yet approved by the national Finance Ministry in Juba,” he added.
The state government also reaffirmed that the security situation in Malakal town is calm and stable.
