A local leader of the National Umma Party, Muhammad Orabi, reported that elements of the Sudanese Army’s Military Intelligence in Singa in Sudan’s Sinnar State arrested Ahmed Omar Al-Nujumi from his home on Monday and took him to an undisclosed location.
Orabi told Radio Tamazuj that the incident is part of a systematic campaign by the Military Intelligence that is targeting activists, politicians, human rights defenders, and resistance committee members. He demanded the release of the detained party member and all other detainees across Sudanese states.
“There has been an ongoing campaign to arrest individuals by Military Intelligence for months,” Orabi noted, “The role of the Armed Forces and Military Intelligence is protecting citizens, especially amidst the country’s year-long war.”
A local activist, Al-Tahir Manufali, told this publication that the situation in Singa is dire and attributed it to the ongoing war.
“The army’s Military Intelligence is arbitrarily arresting youth, activists, and political party members serving displaced persons,” he said.
Manufali noted a recent surge in arrests targeting youth engaged in charitable initiatives and resistance committee members in Singa and Sinnar cities, with Umma Party member Ahmed Omar being the latest detainee.
He pointed out that these violations include terrorism against citizens, indiscriminate firing of shots, and intimidation by popular resistance and shadowy brigades.
The Military Intelligence has been faulted for conducting widespread arrests of activists, politicians, and resistance committees across various Sudanese states that are under military control.
A previous report by the Emergency Lawyers Group in April highlighted numerous arrests by Military Intelligence targeting activists, actors, and politicians. The group emphasized the absence of a constitutional or legal framework authorizing the army to carry out such arrests, especially after the coup which nullified the constitutional document.
Furthermore, the group stated that Military Intelligence has detained family members as hostages to apprehend their relatives.
