South Sudan will grant asylum certificates to about 500 foreign nationals currently sheltering in the UN base in Juba.

South Sudan will grant asylum certificates to about 500 foreign nationals currently sheltering in the UN base in Juba.

515 foreigners from Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia have been living in the UN base with other internally displaced people since the start of the South Sudan Civil War in December 2013.

They are unable to return to their home countries due to threat of violence in those places too.

“The vast majority of them have expressed an interest to seek asylum in South Sudan and will be issued an asylum certificate shortly,” said refugee agency UNHCR in a report released Wednesday.
