S Sudan rebels to create investigative unit for sexual violence

The SPLM/A-IO rebel group will create a special “investigation, monitoring and documentation unit” for sexual violence, following a joint workshop with the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

The SPLM/A-IO rebel group will create a special “investigation, monitoring and documentation unit” for sexual violence, following a joint workshop with the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

In a press statement, SPLM/A-IO said they developed an implementation action plan on sexual violence.

Establishment of the investigation unit is one part of the plan. The rebel group will also appoint a high-level focal point to to serve as primary interlocutor with the UN and to oversee implementation of the plan.

As for the investigation unit itself, it be established “under the auspices of the Military Justice Directorate and will work in close collaboration with Military Justice Officers at Division, Brigade, Battalion and Company levels,” according to the press statement.
