The alliance of South Sudanese opposition parties accused the government of placing opposition leader Lam Akol under strict security surveillance and they say the effective restrictions on his movement are unconstitutional.

Martin Abe, secretary-general of an alliance of South Sudanese opposition parties said Saturday, “They have not withdrawn the security forces from the house Dr. Lam Akol up to this time of talking to you. There are still security personnel around his house and we are told that he has been placed under strict security surveillance. They follow him where ever he goes.”

“We don’t know what this is for. Arresting a citizen illegally is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest term possible by all the law abiding and peace loving citizens of this country as well as our friends in the region and the whole world”,

“This terrorist act of arresting people without notifying them of what they have done and denying having carried out such a malicious act and a terrorist behavior at broad day light is never part of our South Sudanese cultures and it must be stopped by those who are practicing it,” he said.

Lam said in a separate interview that he had contacted several officials at the Ministry of Interior and the Minister of Security about the matter but did not receive any explanation since Thursday.

The act, he said, was unconstitutional because it goes against freedom of movement and the rule of law, calling on government to immediately withdraw the forces for life to return to normal in his house.
