S Sudan minister accuses Chinese company of hacking

South Sudan’s minister of information Michael Makuei Lueth has accused Chinese telecommunications company Huawei of hacking and forgery.

South Sudan’s minister of information Michael Makuei Lueth has accused Chinese telecommunications company Huawei of hacking and forgery.

“I suspect that Huawei has been hacking many Government officials e-mail and falsifying and forging documents on behalf of the senior government officials,” Makuei alleged in a letter, available for download below, sent to foreign affairs minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin and dated 14 October 2014.

Makuei said that Huawei tried to send a forged document to the president of the Export-Import Bank of China Li Ruogo.

The minister alleged that on 3 October, Huawei’s Sullivan Chen sent an email to acting director general of information Paul Jacob Kumbo in hopes of getting a letter printed on official ministry letter-head, signed, and stamped so he could send it to China.

“The purpose of the letter was the postponement of the funding of the Digital Migration TV project,” Makuei charged.

Makuei said he summoned Huawei’s acting managing director and senior staff to explain the matter but none of them showed up.

He recommended to Barnaba that a “serious investigation” be launched against Huawei with the aim of deporting Chen to China if he is found guilty.
