During a speech marking yesterday’s International Day for Human Rights, the South Sudan Human Rights Commission (SSHRC) said the government and rebels are responsible for committing atrocities against innocent civilians.

SSHRC deputy chairman Biel Jok Thiech said that ethnic violence during the ongoing civil war has killed innocent people including women, elderly, and children, as well as damaged properties.

Biel, speaking at the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry in Juba, announced his commission had compiled a comprehensive report of atrocities committed during the ongoing war betwen SPLA factions.

He indicated that the war left thousands of innocent citizens as refugees in neighbouring countries or internally displaced.

He said the SSHRC presented a copy of the report to President Salva Kiir and the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).
