The South Sudan Investigation Committee started work in Jonglei State on Sunday investigating war crimes and crimes against humanities committed during the ongoing civil war.

The committee is comprised of three people and headed by Molana Yahanis Akol and will spend ten days in Jonglei before moving to other conflict-affected states.

Jody Jonglei, Jonglei state minister of information and communications, told Radio Tamazuj that the committee started their work Sunday in a meeting with Governor John Kong Nyuon.

The committee also met with authorities to investigate alleged killings in the Episcopal Church in Bor by the rebels.

Jody said the committee also moved the home of the former state governor where buildings were destroyed.  They aim to meet with anyone who witnessed atrocities, he said.

Jody said the committee will also visit the UNMISS compound in Bor on Monday where over 50 internally displaced persons were killed by a pro-government militia in April.

He said the committee will not carry out investigations in rebel held areas.
