Several South Sudanese citizens have called for peace and implementation of the peace deal signed by President Salva Kiir and armed opposition leader Riek Machar in August.
In interviews conducted by Radio Tamazuj yesterday marking the World Peace Day, several citizens of different backgrounds said they need the peace agreement to be implemented in good faith.
Meanwhile, Director of the University of Juba’s Centre for Peace and Development Studies Luka Biong said the day was an exceptional day for the people of South Sudan.
The scholar said the South Sudanese had lost thousands of lives during the civil war Sudan, besides the loss of lives after 15 December 2013 in South Sudan.
He pointed out that the people of South Sudan are the only beneficiaries of the International Day of Peace.
Biong called on politicians to disseminate the peace agreement to the citizens through local languages. He stressed that political will between the two warring parties is important to meet the aspirations of the population.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
