The head of the Abyei Administrative Area Chol Deng Alak has called on the Khartoum government to release to the local governemnt a 2% share of oil revenue from the area. The statement comes after reports that the Sudanese government included the Abyei Area in its 2016 budget.
Alak told Radio Tamazuj that Abyei area has never received a percentage of the oil revenues as promised in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement since South Sudan declared its independence in 2011.
Alak, who is also a Ngok Dinka leader explained that if Khartoum wants to provide services to the area then the 2% of oil money should be released, saying the percentage is for the Ngok Dinka only.
“If they want to give us something, they should give us the 2% that was being used by them over the past years, they don’t give it to Ngok Dinka, so you give it to us,” he said, adding that the money should not go to the South Sudanese government.
