South Sudan’s head of the Abyei Administrative Area Chol Deng Alak says his side rejects participation in a meeting with Misseriya leaders in Addis Ababa organized by the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC).
Alak told Radio Tamazuj there is no clear agenda to be discussed in the meeting, adding that many other agreements on Abyei area have been reached with Sudan without any implementation.
“Why is a report on the killing of Sultan Kuol Deng has not yet been released, and why is the Sudanese army haven’t yet withdrawn from Diffra north of Abyei until now?” he asked.
Dinka Ngok leaders previously demanded that killers of Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief Kuol Deng Kuol in May 2013 be brought to book before any inter-communal dialogue takes place in Addis Ababa.
Alak, who is the former South Sudanese Ambassador to Moscow, called for implementation of terms and conditions of the previous agreements signed so meetings can restart between the two sides.
The Abyei chief administrator also criticised the international community for failing to protect Ngok Dinka civilians in the contested territory.
Still, Alak confirmed his side’s readiness to participate in local meetings with the Misseriya, refering to recent peace conferences held between the Rizeigat, Misseriya, and Dinka Malual tribes in nearby Northern Bahr al Ghazal state.
Hamad Al Dodu, emir of the Misseriya tribe, previously accused some Ngok Dinka leaders including Alak of deliberately delaying the Addis Ababa talks.
