Ruweng returnees get Red Cross cash aid

At least 1,000 household of returnees from Sudan have received cash support from the South Sudan Red Cross. The exercise was conducted at the Ruweng Administrative Area on Monday.

One of the beneficiaries, Mary Achol, confirmed receiving 340,000 SSP to Radio Tamazuj.

The cash is aimed at supporting the returnees who came from Sudan last year and this year, having been displaced by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).  The war that broke out on April 15, 2023, has claimed many lives and displaced thousands of civilians.

Akol said the money would go into her family expenses as no support was coming to them from the government.

She added that she would engage in small business to sustain the family in future.

Mose Deng said the money would enable him start a business, which he hoped, would grow with time.

Bentiu Red Cross Communication Officer Youane James Makoy said the exercise began with registration of the returnees.

He said the project is called Population Movement and was being supported by the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the Red Crescent.
