The authorities in Ruweng Administrative Area delivered ninety-seven cartons of assorted medicines to Parieng Hospital on Monday to contain the cholera outbreak in the area.

Speaking to the media during the handover of the drugs, the area’s chief administrator, Tiob Monyluak De Diran, said he was happy that the hospital received the emergency intervention drugs to tackle cholera after the health facility registered five cases last week.

“I call upon the national health ministry, World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other partners to supply Parieng Hospital with medicines and build the capacity for the medical personnel to address the cholera cases in the area,” Monyluak said.

Since cholera was confirmed in Upper Nile State on 23 October 2024, the outbreak has spread rapidly, with more than 13,206 cases and 199 deaths reported as of 29 December 2024.

According to UNICEF South Sudan, the highest caseloads were reported in Rubkona county (4,972 suspected cases – average of 300 cases reported daily) and Juba county (1,547 suspected cases). Children are the most affected. The age group with highest case count is 0-4 years (32.5%), followed by the 5-14 years age group (22.8%).
