Long-distance runners competed in Juba on Saturday, February 4, to raise breast cancer awareness among South Sudanese.
The five and ten kilometre races were organised by the Kulang Community Centre in cooperation with the South Sudan Athletic Federation.
David Goli won the men’s ten kilometre distance in 31:39 minutes and Joseph Tagun won the men’s five kilometres race in 20:26 minutes. The winner of the five kilometre women’s race was Estela Tankora.
The Vice President of Kulang, Michael Majok, said the competition served to alert citizens about the risks of breast cancer. According to Majok the disease is spreading in South Sudan.
Data from a 2014 “Cancer Country Profile” by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms the increase. In 2014 out of 3,100 cancer deaths among women, 17.2 percent died of breast cancer.
