Rumbek women’s governance and elections workshop ends

About 60 women drawn from eight 8 payams of Rumbek East County of Lakes State have been trained on good governance and electoral processes organized by UNMISS. The event concluded on Thursday.

The two-day workshop in Rumbek was organized by the gender unit at the UNMISS field office.

The chairperson of the high election committee in Lakes State, Kot Kuocnin Kuer, said the legal framework starts with the constitution and the electoral laws.

“I was invited to present the electoral process to them. I talked about the electoral process that starts with the legal framework, showing that election is based on law,” he said.

“I presented the electoral process to them for almost one and half hours.”

UNMISS Gender Officer Adama Njie said it was a two-day workshop for women’s capacity building at the grassroots level on good governance and the electoral processes.

She said it was also an opportunity to tell them about some of the important instruments that are available both in South Sudan and globally.

It was a very productive and fruitful workshop. We concluded and at the end of the workshop, the women came up with good recommendations, she said.

Njie said women should be part of all sectors in South Sudan, adding that their inclusion and participation is critical.

Lakes State women’s leader Agum Joseph Kuc, said that the women’s participation could bring peace to people more than the men’s.

Kuc urged men to appoint women into leadership whenever women vote for them.
