Lecturers at Rumbek University in South Sudan have issued a strike notice over unpaid two months’ arrears based on the adjusted salary structure.
This came in a meeting of the Rumbek University Academic Staff Association on Wednesday.
In a Wednesday letter bearing the name and signature of Samuel Mabor Alit, Chairman of the Rumbek University Academic Staff Association, the staff body demanded immediate payment of two months’ new adjusted salaries based on the Council of Ministers resolution starting from February to March.
The association, in the letter, also demanded the payment of ticket allowance arrears starting from the July 2019 to July 2022 fiscal year budgets.
“If the Ministry of Finance and Planning fails to implement as directed by the Council of Ministers in their resolutions, then the Academic Staff of Rumbek University of Science and Technology will go on indefinite industrial action starting from 4th of April, 2023,” the letter seen by Radio Tamazuj in part.
Meanwhile, the Rumbek University Academic Registrar, Mathew Malou Mariec, confirmed they demand two months’ salary arrears from the finance ministry.
“In the meeting, the academic staff general assembly reached some resolutions. We demanded immediate payment of two months new adjusted salaries based on the council of ministers resolutions starting from February to March 2023, and the ticket allowances arrears payment starting from July 2019 to July 2022 fiscal year budgets,” he said.
The National Ministry of High Education could not immediately be reached for comment.
Rumbek University is one of the public universities in South Sudan. The other institutions of higher learning include University of Bahr el Ghazal, University of Juba, Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology, and Upper Nile University.
