A delegation of the National Elections Commission’s High-Level Delegations has concluded a two-day assessment visit in Rumbek, Lakes State.
The team, led by Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mac Maika Deng, were received by Lakes State Governor Rin Tueny Mabor in Rumbek upon their arrival on Wednesday.
Paul Cabinet Ayang, Minister for Information and Communication, told Radio Tamazuj that the National Election Commission’s High-Level Committee briefed the governor and all the stakeholders regarding the upcoming general elections and pre-election activities in the country.
“We have been visited by the members of the electoral commission from Juba to assess their facility of the state elections high committee and also to brief the governor and all the stakeholders regarding the upcoming election and pre-election activities and also inform them that very soon they will reconstitute the state high election committees that will oversee elections at the state levels,” he said.
He further said the team told them that the partners to the peace agreement were all serious about elections scheduled for December 2024.
“They (National Elections Commission) are not sure whether it will be general or partial elections. Some say it will be elections for the president, governors, and commissioners, and then the parliament will be extended for a year. But, that’s a discussion for the political parties,” he said.
He pointed out that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Mabor, directed the state elections committee to take over a facility, which is part of the state secretariat, as their office so they can commence their work.
“This is what we discussed with the members of the high election commission in Rumbek,” he said.
He revealed that the state high committee will identify centres in all the eight counties of Lakes State, where civic education and voter registration will be carried out.
“The registration of voters will all be done in all the eight counties of Lakes State but will be discussed later. What is being discussed primarily now is the reconstitution of the state electoral high committee commission, when they will assume office and commence their work,” Cabiet concluded.
