The police in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek, confirmed that a 28-year-old man identified by his nickname, Jungle Man, died on Wednesday after excessively drinking Star Gin which is popularly known as Makuei Lueth as he celebrated the arrival of the New Year.
Police spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the deceased was found lifeless in Rumbek Market on Wednesday morning with bottles of Star Gin around him.
“A young man died on New Year’s Eve while taking alcohol known as Star Gin or Makuei Lueth. The guy took a lot and he lost his life in the process,” he said. “That is what has taken life now, but we count it on him because he is the one who took it. The alcohol is called Yoon in the local language.”
Maj. Mabor said the deceased’s body was taken to Rumbek State Hospital where the doctors carried out the postmortem that confirmed the death was linked to excessive alcohol consumption.
The police spokesperson said the festive season was largely peaceful across Lakes State despite a few challenges of theft and cattle-related violence.
