The police in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek, on Sunday, apprehended their own who was involved in the shooting and killing of a girl and injuring another in a cattle camp last week in Rumbek Central County.

Last Thursday, Police Sergeant Matur Majook Makuer inadvertently shot at two girls in the Dhie cattle camp thinking they were cattle raiders. On the fateful day, he went to Dhie cattle camp for a visit but in the night, he heard people crying in the bush and thought there was an attack by rustlers. Unbeknownst to him, the brothers of the two girls had taken them to the bush to beat them as a punishment.

Majook shot in the direction of the two young girls who were returning to camp, killing one of them, while the other was injured and is still receiving treatment at Rumbek State Hospital. He fled the scene after the shooting.

The police also captured the three male youths who dragged the two girls to the bush.

The police spokesperson in Lakes State, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, confirmed that four suspects had been arrested and that they are under investigation.

“We have arrested the policeman who shot the young girls and the three young men who are accused of dragging the girls to the forest and beating them at night,” he said. “The policeman was trying to rescue but killed accidentally.”

Maj. Mabor said the girl who survived the shooting is recovering well in the hospital.
