A team of surgeons at Rumbek Hospital in Western Lakes State on Friday removed a needle holder from inside a woman’s stomach, where it had been left for nine months.

Yar Jany Gai, a mother of four, underwent a medical operation at Mapuordit hospital last year, but doctors left the object behind before stitching her up.

Yar said she started feeling a lot of pain in her stomach a month after the doctors discharged her from Mapuordit hospital.

“When I was having pain in the stomach, my husband returned me to Mapuordit hospital. Doctors in the hospital tried to check my stomach using a scanner and after that, they gave me some medicine to take from home. They requested that I return in May for another operation inside my stomach, but didn’t disclose to me,” said Yar.

The woman further explained how she started experiencing swellings with pus about two weeks after she returned from the hospital.

“Surprisingly, the needle holder’s end inside my stomach appeared outside my skin by half an inch. My husband immediately took me to Rumbek hospital for X-ray scanning and when it was scanned, the device appeared very clearly inside me and I was successfully operated by Rumbek doctors,” she said.

Yar said the sight of the instrument being removed shocked many people. She appreciated all the medical team for successfully operating her.

Meanwhile, doctors at Rumbek hospital said the needle holder is a sharp instrument.

Dr. Mabor Maker, who was in charge of Rumbek Hospital, confirmed the medical operation was carried out to remove the instrument from inside a patient’s stomach.

“When doctors are working in any hospital after pressure, such things may occur because operations are always done quickly by doctors in the hospital due to oxygen and this can sometimes make doctors forget devices they use,” Maker told Radio Tamazuj Monday.

“These things happen even in big hospitals of the world, “added.

Maker said the woman is responding well to medication.

He, however, emphasized that Mapuordit hospital is one of the best hospitals, not only in Lakes State region, but the entire country.
