An eight-year-old girl was killed and two adults injured in a crash involving a motorcycle and Tipper truck in Rubkona County of Unity State on Thursday, traffic police said.
The deceased was only identified as Nyanguen.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj in Rubkona on Saturday, the State Director of Traffic Police, Domai Dak Kai, blamed the road accident on over-speeding. He said the road accident occurred between the Unity oilfields and the Laloba area.
“There was a Tipper truck moving with high speed, it was among a convoy of six trucks, and the driver tried to overtake the other trucks, and there was a lot of dust. So the truck collided with a motorbike carrying three people. And as a result, a child died, and two adults were injured, including the mother of the child who died on the spot,” Dak said.
According to the traffic police officer, the boda-boda rider also sustained injuries in the road accident.
“The mother of the child who died is being treated at Bentiu Hospital, while the motorbike owner has been transferred to the MSF clinic because he has sustained serious injuries,” he said.
Dak pointed out that the truck driver was arrested pending investigations. “After the incident, the first thing we did was to arrest the suspect, and he is being detained at Bentiu police station until the investigation is completed,” Dak said.
The traffic police officer extended his condolences to the victim’s family and urged them to remain calm as investigations continue. Dak warned the drivers against overloading and over-speeding. He also underscored that motorcycles are only allowed to carry one passenger at a time.
