Dr. Sir Al-Khatim Awad Al-Karim, a medical staff member at Al-Madina Arab Hospital in Sudan’s Al Gezira State, lost his life on Sunday, with several others injured as the Rapid Support Forces opened fire within the hospital premises.
On the same day, the Rapid Support Forces gained control over the Al-Madina Arab area, situated west of Wad Madani City and 20 kilometers east of Al-Manaqil City, the sole military base in Al Gezira State.
The Sudan Doctors Union stated in a press release that the deceased doctor had performed a surgical operation on an injured Rapid Support Forces member during the battles. Following the patient’s death, the accompanying Rapid Support Forces personnel shot at the doctors, resulting in the doctor’s death and that of another unidentified person.
The statement urgently called on human rights organizations and the international community to take action against these ongoing crimes targeting the Sudanese people and medical personnel.
Sayed Mohamed, the spokesperson for the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate, expressed deep regret for the loss of over fifty medical personnel in Sudan during the ongoing war. He clarified that a doctor had dedicated efforts to treating the injured, but complications arose during the operation, leading to the doctor’s death. Subsequently, the accompanying Rapid Support Forces opened fire, resulting in the doctor’s death and injuries to others.
Unfortunately, due to disrupted communication networks in Gezira State, information about the injured individuals is currently unavailable.
In contrast, Mustafa Mohamed, an advisor for the Rapid Support Forces, claimed ignorance of the incident details. He stated that no official source had released this news and that the circulated information is based on social media reports.
Mohamed added that they are awaiting confirmation from the Rapid Support Forces leadership in Gezira State to initiate an investigation into this incident.
