At least eight people were killed and nine others injured in a ghastly road accident on Monday in Lakes State’s Yirol West County.

At least eight people were killed and nine others injured in a ghastly road accident on Monday in Lakes State’s Yirol West County.

The incident occurred in the Madbar area when a Toyota Land Cruiser traveling from Aweil to Juba collided with a fuel tanker.

Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac, the Lakes State police spokesperson, told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that there were 18 passengers in the Land Cruiser and eight of them died on the spot. 

“It happened on Monday when a passenger vehicle was traveling from Aweil to Juba carrying about 18 people collided with a fuel tanker at Madbar,” he said. “8 passengers in the Toyota died and the others were injured.  The case was reported to the police which intervened to rescue the situation.”

According to Maj. Mabor, some of the deceased have not been identified and the survivors are receiving treatment at Yirol Hospital.

“We managed to identify some of the deceased and the wounded were evacuated to Yirol Hospital for treatment,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Riak Amuor, the Yirol West County Medical Officer, said two children were among the passengers who died on the spot.

“It involved a Toyota and fuel tank and 8 people passed on immediately. Among the dead were three females, three males, and two male children. The driver of the Toyota also died,” he stated. “At the hospital, we have nine injured passengers who were in the Toyota. A child aged 10 who has not been identified has serious head injuries and a fracture and has been on oxygen ever since admission.”
