The interim chair of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation (RJMEC) is calling on parties to the peace agreement to expedite the implementation of pending tasks.
Augustino Njoroge made the statement while briefing participants on the progress of the peace implementation at a 3-day peace dissemination workshop in Yei River state last week.
“There remains much to be done and we continue to urge the parties to the conflict to ensure that the remaining processes are expedited to catch up with lost time,” he said.
“During this critical time what is needed is accommodating one another, making compromises and agreeing on concrete measures to implement the key pending tasks of the pre-transitional period,” he added.
Njoroge further stressed the need to promote inclusivity and popular ownership of the agreement by all South Sudanese.
For his part, the ECSS Archbishop of the internal province of greater Northern Bahr el-Ghazal Moses Deng said religious leaders and all community stakeholders have a role in disseminating the agreement.
John Kenyi Elisa, one of the participants, said he now understands the agreement well after they were trained on the eight chapters and outstanding issues.
“On top of what we have learned, the community leaders and others have been tasked to continue disseminating the agreement in their respective areas of residence to promote peace and reconciliation,” he added.
Yei River State governor, Emmanuel Adil Anthony called on the residents including the government officials to continue preaching the peace agreement and messages of reconciliation in the communities.
The workshop organized by the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) and Revitalized Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) was attended by over 100 inter-religious leaders, civil society organizations, parliamentarians, and government officials.
