Rizeigat, Ma’alia tribes hold peace conference today in Merowe town

A final peace and reconciliation conference between the Arab nomadic tribes Rizeigat and Ma’alia in East Darfur state would be convened today Sunday in Merowe town in Sudan’s Northern State.

The head of the Rizeigat-Ma’alia peace committee previously announced that the reconciliation conference was scheduled to be held in early December in Merowe town.

In a press statement, Northern governor Ibrahim El Khidir confirmed their readiness to host the event, saying he would exert efforts to make sure the conference is successful.

He said the selection of Northern state to host the conference shows unity among the people of Sudan, besides security and stability in the state.

The top state official pointed out that East Darfur would soon close the chapter of ethnic strife to embark on development.

Sudan’s First Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh recently directed the Minister of Decentralized Governance Farah Mustafa to carry out full coordination with the relevant authorities with regards to the conference in order to provide what is needed for the success of the reconciliation.

The minister said the two feuding tribes and the Magistrate committee was ready to go to Merowe on Saturday.
