Transport along the Nile between Jonglei and Fangak states has been suspended indefinitely due to security concerns, a local official told Radio Tamazuj Sunday.

Elijah Thongbor, Jonglei Boats Trade Union secretary-general said transport along the Nile was halted between Jonglei and Fangak States since last week.

He said at least two people were killed and five others injured when local communities from Jonglei and Eastern Lakes states clashed over the ownership of a sanctuary along the Nile.

“There are no travels because River Nile at Jorwach is unsafe. Now several boats with goods on route to Fangak are stranded and also some boats coming to Bor from Fangak are stranded in Duk because of fear of attacks,” he said.

Thongbor said insecurity along the Nile has brought their businesses to a standstill urging Eastern Lakes and Jonglei states authorities to provide security for the Nile users.

Daniel Malith, the secretary-general for Jonglei government said they are aware of the incident and are consulting with their counterparts in Eastern Lakes to resolve the land dispute.
