River transport between Fangak and Jonglei states resumes

Transport along the Nile River between South Sudan’s Jonglei State and neighboring Fangak State has resumed following weeks of suspension over insecurity in the region, authorities said.

Transport along the Nile River between South Sudan’s Jonglei State and neighboring Fangak State has resumed following weeks of suspension over insecurity in the region, authorities said.

In March, two rival communities from Jonglei and Eastern Lakes states clashed over the ownership of Liet-Buoi, an area located between the two states. At least two people were reported killed in the incident.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the Secretary General for Jonglei Boat Trade Union, Elijah Thongbor said transport resumed last week after the rival communities vacated the disputed area.

“We learnt that there are security forces at Jorwach. More than 10 boats arrived in Bor from Fangak since last week. No incident was reported in the last four days,” he said.

Thongbor urged South Sudanese to embrace peace for the sake of development.
