Citizens in Arroyo County of South Sudan’s Aweil State are still suffering from river blindness without medical help, a local official said.

Arkanjelo Uchu, the County Commissioner of Arroyo, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday said that local residents in several areas are complaining about the disease. However, he didn’t give details about the areas affected by the disease.

The local official called on the state government and National Ministry of Health to control the disease in the area.

River Blindness is an eye and skin caused by worms, and is transmitted through repeated bites of types of flies which breed in fast–flowing streams and rivers. Bites increase the risk of blindness for individuals living nearby.
