Rickshaw rider arrested over deadly accident in Lakes State

The traffic police in South Sudan’s Lakes State have arrested a rickshaw rider after he was involved in an accident that claimed the life of his assistant, a minor, on Tuesday.

The traffic police in South Sudan’s Lakes State have arrested a rickshaw rider after he was involved in an accident that claimed the life of his assistant, a minor, on Tuesday.

According to initial police reports, the accident happened at 2:30 PM in Patiir Boma of Rumbek East County due to overloading and speeding. 

The traffic police investigator, Peter Makoi told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the assistant driver, identified as Aru Gabriel Chol Kuac, 13, died in the accident. 

“The driver and assistant driver of the rickshaw loaded the rickshaw with bags of cement and other construction materials from Rumbek market and they left Rumbek Town,” he explained. “When they reached a place called Monyieng-Patiir Boma their rickshaw overturned after hitting a Lulu tree killing the assistant rickshaw driver. The driver survived and is now under police custody for investigation.” 

The administrator of Rumbek Hospital, Mawet Bol, confirmed that the deceased succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the hospital. 

He said the young boy died of seevere head and chest injuries after he fell off the rickshaw.
