Illegal checkpoints in Renk County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state have been removed, according to director of revenue Ahmed Akol.
Akol told Radio Tamazuj that the removal of illegal checkpoints was carried out in coordination with a delegation dispatched from the headquarters in Malakal to control revenue collection.
He specified that illegal posts at Geiger, Rimeila and Jalhak areas were removed. He added other checkpoints belonging to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining are also working in taxes collection.
The value-added tax has also been cancelled, according to the county official.
Northern Upper Nile traders recently complained about high taxes imposed on them, besides multiple illegal collection points in Renk and other border areas. They also warned of its negative impact on trade sector.
