More than 2,000 returnees in Pigi County of Jonglei State are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, a lawmaker said.
Mathew Matiok Lem, a legislator representing the county in the state assembly, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the returnees who started arriving in January have no access to basic services.
“My area was deserted after the outbreak of the war in December 2013. As security improved, the locals started returning since January. Now, there are more than 2,000 people in Khorfulus town, Mereng, Kolthok, Konliet and Wut-Lem. They lack basic health services, food and shelter,” said Matiok.
He added, “Up to now, some surrounding villages are still insecure. And with the delays in rainfalls, there will be no good harvests.”
The lawmaker urged the government and aid agencies to intervene.
