Resilience and recovery program implementation starts in Torit

A high-level delegation from the embassy of the Netherlands and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) visited Torit State to implement youth resilience and recovery programs.

A high-level delegation from the embassy of the Netherlands and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) visited Torit State to implement youth resilience and recovery programs.

The program, officials said on Tuesday, is part of the $10 million dollar project earmarked to cover Juba, Bor, Rumbek, Yambio and Torit.

“We understand that the program will actually help people live better lives,” Marc Leon Mazairac, the coordinator for development affairs at the embassy of the Netherlands told reporters on Tuesday.

He said the recovery program will make the youth self-reliant.

“It is very important for the youth because youth are cornerstones of every society and especially for this society where youth are looking for opportunities, ways of getting trained and making progress with a lot of other activities from the Dutch government,” Mazairac said.

The program specialist, livelihoods and inclusive growth at UNDP, Daniel Maker Riak said the program’s implementation includes business linkages that will allow youth to get employment opportunities.

“We are here to implement some of the activities implemented under the youth development project. We thank the Kingdom of the Netherlands for providing funds for these programs,” Riak said.

A strong private sector creates employment for young people, he added.

Meanwhile, the state governor Tobiolo Alberio Oromo said the resilience and recovery program addresses needs of all the citizens.

“We have been engaged with a lot of activities since 2018 and up to now, this is how we are coming to discuss how we can align those priorities with our partners. Together, we can give services to the people of Torit state,” he said.

Oromo promised to support the program to ensure its success in Torit.

In October 2018, a high-level team led by the United States ambassador to South Sudan, visited Torit to assess the needs of the population for a recovery and resilience project covering five years.
