Residents of Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have expressed concern about increasing crime rates as Christmas approaches.

In interviews carried out by Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, several Bor natives complained about surging crime rates in the area, while accusing the police of failing to provide adequate security ad protection.

A local resident, who only identified himself as Gai, said he lost several personal belongings when his house was broken into a week ago.

“They broke into my house in Block 1 neighborhood last week between 11 pm and 3 am, while I was a sleep. They collected phones and Christmas clothes meant for my children,” Gai said.

Gai further said police authorities were notified over the incident, but nothing was done. He urged the police to deploy during night hours to protect the citizens.

Another resident, only identified as Tabitha, said she experienced havoc from criminal groups who operate on roads during night hours.

She urged the government to impose curfew in order to improve security.

On his part, Major Majak Daniel, the state police director for information and public relations admitted the rise in crime rates since last month, but said security will be beefed up in the festive season.
