The government committee formed to investigate fighting in Wau town says differences between the ousted governor and SPLA commander in the area was the main reason behind the attack on the town, saying the quarrel between the two officials caused ethnic tension in the area.
According to the high-level committee headed by National Minister of Health Riek Gai Kok, political, tribal, security and economic factors contributed toward the ethnically-charged clashes in the town in June.
The committee pointed out that some SPLA soldiers in uniform were involved in the attack on 24 June. In its report, the government committee claimed that about 26 soldiers suspected of involvement in killings were arrested including wounded soldiers.
The report announced that about 1,011 shops were looted and that traders lost over 20 million South Sudan Pounds in the area. The report recommended the relocation of SPLA army outside Wau town in an attempt to create a good relationship between the state government and citizens.
The committee interviewed eye witnesses, chiefs and religious leaders, according to the report.
