Renk town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state is deserted again after civilians fled the town during fighting between the SPLA-Juba forces and SPLA-IO fighters earlier this week.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, several local citizens said the recent shelling by the rebels stirred up fear among locals, causing exodus of families from the town.

They pointed out that most of the families decided to travel to Sudanese towns at the Upper Nile-Sudan border.

However, they said a few residents, mostly businesspeople, returned back to the town on Sunday. The conflict-affected citizens disclosed that civil servants and other employees fled to Khartoum and Kosti towns in Sudan.
