Local authorities and the Farmers Union in Renk County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State announced their preparedness for the cultivation season despite conflict elsewhere in the state.
Renk County borders on Sudan to the north. It has many mechanized agricultural schemes as well as a tarmac road to the north, which facilitates movement of produce to markets.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the Renk County Commissioner Kur Chuai Deng stated his county is ready for cultivation season in May and June.
However, he noted the local famers are experiencing some shortages of seeds, agricultural machineries and fuel.
The ongoing crisis is likely to affect the process, he said, because the roads connecting the county with the other towns including the capital Juba will be cut off this year, according to the official.
The commissioner affirmed the Farmers Union in the county is ready to travel to Juba to meet the national Ministry of Agriculture so as to discuss ways how to address the obstacles facing the agriculture sector.
