Relocation of Nuba refugees to Pamir camp continues

Relocation of Sudanese refugees from Yida camp to a new site in Pamir area in South Sudan’s Ruweng State is ongoing, amid dire condition among women and children, several refugees said.

A refugee living in Pamir camp told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the UN refugee agency is still transporting Nuba refugees from Yida camp to Pamir area, saying nearly 600 refugees are being relocated to the new camp everyday.

He added that the number of the Sudanese refugees who have already arrived in the new camp could reach 3,000 people. The refugee complained about water shortages and other basic services in the new camp.

Meanwhile, several refugees at Yida camp said that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that it would not provide aid assistance to the Nuba refugees unless they move to Pamir refugee camp.

For its part, the International Network of the Nuba Mountains Civil Society Organizations has called on the UNHCR to stop the relocation for the sake of the refugee’s welfare.

Amar Nasir, Secretary General of the Network, told Radio Tamazuj that the Nuba refugees want to settle in Yida camp because they were given farmlands there, saying the new camp is very far from South Kordofan State.

Nasir called on South Sudan government to care for the Sudanese refugees in its territory.
