Rehabilitation of roads begins in Eastern Lakes: official

Rehabilitation of roads has started in South Sudan’s Eastern Lakes State, a government official said.

Rehabilitation of roads has started in South Sudan’s Eastern Lakes State, a government official said.

The state minister for physical infrastructure, Abraham Majak Makur, told Radio Tamazuj last week that work on roads linking the greater Bahr el Ghazal region to the rest of the states kicked off on December 8.

He further said road repairs will run for two months in the state.

“Now, the ongoing work is filling of the potholes so that trucks which were stuck for three weeks reach their destinations. We leveled about 24 km of the road near Ciir cattle camp,”Makur said.

“After the cross cutting areas are filled up and leveled, real construction will begin. This could take two to three months. Our target is Yirol-Alwaklwak road, which is 31 miles and Yirol-Geng-geng road which is 32 miles and 30-40 meters wide,” he added.

Makur pointed out that the construction work would cost $152,000.

He emphasized that the road under construction will connect Yirol to the rest of South Sudan.

Years of civil war allowed minimal progress in infrastructural development, and the country’s road network has suffered greatly, affecting economic development.
