The aid agency International Organization for Migration has resumed registration of displaced people who are living in Awerial County since fleeing violence in Jonglei.

Approximately 84,000 people are sheltering in Mingkaman and surrounding areas of Awerial County, according to UN figures. They fled across the Nile from Bor County of Jonglei State in December and January.

IOM began its registration on 19 January but was forced to suspend it about a week later owing to clashes in the area. The organization had registered only about a fifth of the displaced population when it shut down the effort.

After returning one of its teams to Awerial on 5 February, IOM has since resumed registration of the refugees. Other aid operations by partner NGOs are scaling up simultaneously, such as health and nutrition services.

“IOM has resumed registration of the displaced population in Awerial, Lakes State, near Jonglei State’s capital Bor,” the aid agency said on its Facebook page in a photo album released today.

“The information gathered by IOM includes demographic data such as age, sex and place of origin. This data is used by IOM and humanitarian partners to help ensure that aid is quickly and effectively delivered to those who need it most,” the agency explained in the photo release.
