A member of Sudan’s National Election Commission (NEC) announced that the two-week electoral registration period for next year’s elections will begin Tuesday.
The registration is the first stage in the voting process, which will see President Omar al-Bashir, who has been in power since 1989, stand for re-election in April.
In a Saturday statement in Khartoum, the head of the registration department El Hadi Mohammed Ahmed said the old electoral register will be revised.
El Hadi said names of deceased and South Sudanese who lost their citizenship after independence will be deleted from the list, while 2010 voters who moved to other geographical constituencies will be revised.
The official said the second phase will be the registration of those who did not meet voting rights in the previous elections, for example those who were underage.
He said registration centres are the same polling centres of the 2010 elections, saying the commission will give a copy of the list of registration centres to the political parties.
Last week, the NEC welcomed international monitoring of the elections.
