Nuba refugees living in Yida camp in South Sudan’s Unity state are reporting a shortage mosquito nets as the rainy season starts, complaining that nets and other needed household items were not part of a recent distribution by the UN refugee agency.
In interviews last Friday, several Nuba refugees inside the camp told Radio Tamazuj they have recently received their food rations and some sheets from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), but they are still in need of utensils and treated mosquito nets.
They expressed concern about the spread of malaria owing to the rainy season, saying they are waiting for mosquito nets from the UNHCR.
“We have been experiencing shortages of food and shelter, but the UN organization has recently given us the food and some sheets,” a refugee explained.
“In addition to that, the quantity of salt that used to be distributed to the refugees is inadequate, so we call on the aid organizations to provide us with salt,” he added.
The refugees also commended the humanitarian role played by UNHCR in providing assistance to them in the camp.
