Red eye disease on the rise in Wau

The Director of the Eye Treatment Department at the Wau Teaching Hospital in Western Bahr al -Ghazal State has expressed fears of an outbreak of the red eye disease following a rise in the cases reported daily.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Karlo Mere Oraj, said the hospital was working hard to address the cases that were increasing at 50 percent daily.

“Every day we are working on this since it started. We are receiving a big number every day with a 50 percent rise,” said Oraj.

We ask the patients if they have similar cases at home and they say yes. We advise that all come to hospital because we have some drugs, he added.

“If people experience such symptoms, let them visit the hospital so that they get treatment,” he added.

An eye specialist at the hospital, Afriki Amado, explained that the red eye disease is communicable and has three types. She cautioned against the sharing of items like mobile phones.

Amado said that most people coming to the hospital with the red eye symptoms were women and children.

“The high number coming to us are women and children. If you experience an eye illness, just come to us in the hospital so that you are first tested then you get the drugs,” she said.

This disease is transferred through greetings or touching, she added, and cautioned against sharing items then touching the eyes before washing.

Amado also urged people to avoid congested spaces.
