The Red Cross office in Western Equatoria state, South Sudan, has expressed dismay over lack of basic services for internally displaced who fled violence from Maridi and Mundri West counties to Yambio, capital of the state.
The humanitarian organization, according to its representative in the area, claimed the situation in which the displaced was living was deteriorating and that they were shocked during the visit to the area in which the displaced are temporary settled in the state.
Wilson Samson, an emergency preparedness and field officer for Red Cross office in Yambio said after house to house visits on Tuesday that conditions of the internally displaced were deteriorating in terms of food, water and shelter.
“I was shocked to look at them because most of the kids like the other house we visited yesterday more than 40 children apart from the elderly people who were there and we show them really are most vulnerable people and the ground and the situation we looked at it yesterday was not good.
“One, in terms of feeding it was really a very big challenge because according to what we assess yesterday one is they don’t have food available with them and other challenge is the source of water is very far from them,” said Wilson on Tuesday.
The official said they have stopped registration of the internally displaced persons in Yambio after registering more than two thousand beneficiaries due to limited resources, despite the presence of many of the displaced not registered. He said they have screened out about three hundred residents of Yambio who wanted to register, asserting that registration was only for vulnerable people.
