South Sudan’s main armed opposition group allied to former first vice president turned rebel leader, Riek Machar says it has abducted six aid workers in an ambush in northern town of Raja in Lol state on Sunday morning.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Lam Paul Gabriel, rebel deputy spokesman, said they had captured the six aid workers, saying they are ready to hand them over.
“The abducted aid workers are now with us and they are in safe hands,” he said.
He claimed that they are holding the relief workers to save their lives during the attack in Raja. The rebel official said that they killed dozens of Sudanese rebels in the attack.
The top United Nations relief official in South Sudan today expressed grave concern over the missing aid workers in Raja since Sunday.
“The six aid workers, including one international and five national staff, working for two international and one national aid organisations, were travelling on Raja-Wau road when they went missing,” UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan Alain Noudéhou said in a statement.
