The leader of the South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (SSDM/A-Cobra faction) General David Yau Yau on Tuesday arrived in Juba, signaling his commitment to a peace pact reached recently with the government.
Yau Yau was received at Juba Airport by members of his native Murle community as well as church leaders who had helped broker the peace pact.
Speaking at a news conference, Yau Yau said his return to Juba marks the end of the fighting between him and the government. He said he will engage with government in solving issues that are affecting the security of the country.
“We have arrived safely to Juba and my visit will mark the end of fighting between the Cobra faction and the government. We have now finalized everything, which is a great achievement for the four communities of Greater Pibor,” Yau Yau said.
Among those receiving the commander were Bishop Emeritus Paride Taban of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Torit, who led the mediation.
Presidential Advisor Akok Lual said it was a great day for South Sudan and for people of Greater Pibor in particularly. He said they will work hand in hand together to resolve other crises affecting the nation.
Some observers, however, have expressed concern that the Cobra Faction after joining the government will now be encouraged to participate in army operations in Jonglei state. Up to now the faction has not apparently engaged in fighting elsewhere in the state.
