A top rebel commander of the South Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM) has declared himself leader of the movement, ousting his boss General Bapiny Monytuil.
The South Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SSLM/A) is a member of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) faction that signed the revitalized peace agreement.
General Jacob Nyier told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that he is now the new leader of the opposition South Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM).
“Members of the movement met and resolved to remove Bapiny and selected me to be the new leader,” he said.
Nyier said his former chairman has a lack of clear vision and objectives as well as a lack of clear chain of command in the armed movement.
For his part, General Bapiny Monytuil has hit out at his general Jacob Nyier, who he says had "no authority" to remove him.
Bapiny also said he is still the leader of the armed opposition group. Monytuil further said Jacob Nyier had defected to President Salva Kiir.
In September, several members of the opposition alliance suffered splits and divisions.
