Rape victim demands justice in Yei

A South Sudanese lady in Yei River State, who was allegedly raped, demanded a stringent action against the perpetrator.

A South Sudanese lady in Yei River State, who was allegedly raped, demanded a stringent action against the perpetrator.

The rape victim, who identified herself as Nya (not the real name), said she was raped by unknown man at gun point in the area of Y-warm, which is located five miles away from Yei when she was collecting mangoes.

John Mawa, an eyewitness at the scene, said: “I was on a mango tree and the armed man also threatened to shoot me down like a monkey if I tried to climb down,” he said.

“He pulled my sister and raped her. He raped her because he had a gun,” he added.

For his part, Yei River County Commissioner Justine Lokonga condemned the act in the strongest possible terms.

Justine said his office has been informed about the incident, saying a team of security investigators had been dispatched to the scene to arrest the perpetrator.

Justine appealed to the public to cooperate with the county authorities and security personnel so that culprits are monitored and arrested immediately.

Last week, women parliamentarians in the state legislative assembly protested to demand justice and end to rape against women and girls in the state since the outbreak of war in 2016.
