South African Deputy President Cyril Ramphosa visited South Sudan’s capital Juba on Monday in an attempt to bolster the reunification of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
The delegation of the Special Envoy of President Jacob Zuma also included the Secretary-General of Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi Abdurrahman Kinana.
The stated aim of the visit was to learn about progress made in the implementation of the Arusha Agreement on the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s (SPLM) unification following the return of armed opposition leader Riek Machar as the country’s first vice president.
“Deputy President Ramaphosa has worked tirelessly, alongside the Secretary-General of Tanzania’s ruling party, Abdulrahman Kinana, for the restoration of unity of purpose within the ranks of the SPLM as a precursor to the creation of peace and stability in the country and the formation of the unity government in Juba,” reads a statement published by the South African presidency yesterday.
