Raja hospital lacks beds and water after looting spree

A lawmaker from Lol State has decried the poor condition of the state main hospital in Raja following a looting spree in June when rebels overran the town.

Hon. William Wel Deng, who leads the information and agriculture committee in the Lol State Legislative Assembly confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that the hospital still remains empty after being looted by armed men in June this year.

Gunmen opposed to the creation of Lol State after a presidential decree splitting Raja County from Wau County briefly expelled the new Lol government back to Northern Bahr al Ghazal State in June.

Wel said, "The current problems facing citizens in Raja is the lack of health services because we have toured the state hospital and we found that there are beds in maternity ward and no water as well.”

"Roads access is also another problem - we went about 4KM out of Raja city, we find it difficult because roads are very bad,” he added.

The legislator has also expressed his concern about the poor harvest due to insecurity that caused local farmers to abandoned their farms unweeded and unattended.

“Yes, it is true the recent rebel activities in Raja have caused farmers to leave behind their farms unattended and crops are not even weeded. This has resulted to massive crops failure and now local people are now facing food shortage with the gallon of sorghum being sold now at 90 SSP compare to other counties like Aweil West and North where the same gallon is sold at 50 SSP,” he explained

On a different note, Hon. Wel disputed a claimed made by Hon. Majang Ngor Kuany that Lol State Cabinet and legislatures were being pressured to go to Raja when the security situation has not improved.

Some officials have declined to relocate to Raja.

He claimed the state is peaceful and citizens go about their normal businesses and urged all legislators to help in preaching peace and forgiveness to the state's different communities.
