Youths from Hiyala Payam in Eastern Equatoria allegedly killed a man because they said he caused a drought in the area. Nobody has yet been arrested.

German Charles, Torit County Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that local youths from Hiyala Payam claimed to have received the order to kill the rainmaker from a chief of the area.

The killing on Saturday happened during a serious drought in Eastern Equatoria State.

Commissioner Charles stated that community members believed the slain man to have spiritual powers and blamed him for having contributed to the drought in the county, specifically in Hiyala Payam.

The chief is accused of having blamed the rainmaker for causing the drought. The two men were actually brothers.

According to the Torit County Commissioner, security personnel went to the payam to investigate but community members refused to hand over the perpetrators to the government.

The community protested against the security saying, “If the security want to arrest them then the whole village should be arrested and security found it difficult and they returned to the town.”

He said they will develop other tactics to find the suspected killers. He condemned the killing saying, “No one can have responsibility over the rainfall in the area except God.”
